Ahae and Sunset

"Sunset – West":
This composition is the most personal for me, and it relates as much to the artist, AHAE, as to the subject matter itself. The inspiration for the music came directly from several conversations I had with AHAE's son, Keith Yoo, about his father's life, philosophy, and interpretation of the Bible, of which I am also an avid reader. From these conversations I learned that many biblical figures go west as a symbol for their death, because the sun sets in the west. The piece is therefore a contemplation of both the beauty of the sunset in AHAE's powerful photographs and of our own mortality. The music is nostalgic and wistful, but at the same time also hopeful for the coming birth of the new day after the dark night. Adhering to the ideas of simplicity that I have used in this series of compositions, this work uses only eight pitches, but it does modulate to four different modes within the same key signature, symbolic of the sunset as seen in the four seasons.

"해질녘 - 서편":
이 작곡은 지극히 개인적인 것이자 또한 예술가 아해와 관련되어 있는 주제 그 자체이다. 작곡에 대한 영감은 아해의 아들 유혁기와의 대화들을 통해 구현될 수 있었다. 그 대화는 그의 아버지의 인생과 철학, 성경의 해석과 관련된 것이었다.
 

 

 

 

인간은 나약하다. 

이 표현 외에 말할 수 있는 인간에 대한 보다 더 솔직하고 정직한 표현이 또 있을까. 파스칼의 팡세도 그것을 말하고 있지 않은가. 그 책 안에 담긴 신에 대한 수많은 찬양의 글들을 독자에게 설명하기 전, 우리에게 던져진 그의 한마디 말은 나약함에 대한 인간 평가였다. 곧 나약함에 대한 통찰이다. 인간은 곧 죽을 연약한 갈대에 불과하다는 그 설명. 그처럼 팡세를 집약해 놓는 표현도 또 없을 것이다.

 

인간은 가장 나약하고 연약한 존재다. 

 

 

 

 

그래서일지 모르나 우리는 자연을 우러러본다.

광대무변할 듯 보이는 자연을 우러러보며 우리와 다른 면에서 자연을 공경한다. 하지만 자세히 그 안을 들여다보면 그것만 있는 것은 아님을 우리는 분명히 보아 알 수 있다. 우리는 그 자연 속에서 동질감 또한 강하게 느낄 수밖에 없기 때문이다.

 

봄과 여름, 가을과 겨울이 반복되는 과정, 삶과 죽음, 생명과 파괴, 그리고 새로운 탄생의 순환은 자연 안에 잠재되어 있고 끊임없이 우리에게 대화를 걸며 지혜를 나타낸다. 건재할 것만 같던 현상도 시간이 지나면 언제 그랬냐는 듯 사라지며, 다른 모습으로 우리에게 나타난다. 언제 그랬냐는 듯 말이다. 새 생명의 발현, 그것은 다시 원래의 자리로 되돌려 놓아져 우리에게 조용히 나타난다. 이미 있던 것이 후에 다시 있고, 창조는 계속된다. 

 

우리는 자연을 통해 죽음과 새 생명의 가능성을 옅본다. '영원'을 우리는 느낄 수 있다. 

 

 

 

 

그것을 표현하고자 한 작품이라면 그림이든 사진이든 뭐든 상관없이 존경받아 마땅하다.

그 이유는 곧 우리 자신이 되돌아가야 할 영원의 가능성에 대한 표현이기 때문이다. 한 가지 안타까운 것이 있다면 나 자신의 나약함이 말할 수 없도록 크다는 것 하나와, 작품들이 오해를 받아 영원히 빛을 보지 못할 것 같은 역사의 소용돌이가 느껴지기 때문일 것이다. 

 

원 없이 글을 쓸 수 있다면..

얽매임 없는 곳에서 살 수 있다면.
